USA Rice Announces Annual K-12 "Healthy Rice Bowls Contest"

Winners Receive Gift Card and Rice Cookers

USA Rice Federation announced its annual "Healthy Rice Bowls Contest" for Kindergarten through 12th grade (K-12) school foodservice directors and menu planners at the School Nutrition Association Annual National Conference in Dallas. Contest runs in September in honor of National Rice Month, which this year marks its 20th anniversary, and encourages creative use of U.S.-grown rice in schools. Rice bowls fit the growing need for more nutritious food options with whole grains on menus, and engage children in eating healthier meals.

Their popular "Wok ’n Bowl" station features Beef and Broccoli Rice Bowl, Teriyaki Chicken Rice Bowl, and others. Sylvia Kravitz, Product Development Technician for SDUSD said, "Students told us they wanted something appealing, filling, fast, easy to hold, and most important - great tasting food. Rice bowls are the perfect solution."

The USA Rice Federation is the global advocate for all segments of the rice industry, conducting programs to build awareness and usage of U.S.-grown rice. U.S. rice accounts for 85% of the rice consumed in America. It is grown and harvested by farmers in Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Texas according to the highest quality standards. The U.S. produces an abundance of short, medium and long grain rice, as well as organic and specialty rices including jasmine, basmati, arborio, red aromatic and black japonica, among others. Look for the U.S. rice industry’s “Grown in the US” logo on packages of 100% domestically grown rice.
