National Rice Month Highlights Growing Preference for U.S.-Grown Rice in Foodservice
Brown Rice also stands out in September, Whole Grains Month
Arlington, VA, August 13, 2008 – U.S. rice’s versatility, nutritional and economic value is honored in September with the celebration of National Rice Month, which Congress designated in 1991 to increase awareness of rice and recognize the contribution the rice industry makes to the U.S. economy. Now U.S. rice accounts for over 80% of the rice consumed in America and its popularity is increasing in foodservice, with 80% of operators considering rice to be an essential ingredient on their menus.
USA Rice Federation proprietary research with 350 foodservice chefs/operators found the top reasons for preferring U.S.-grown rice were to support American farmers (86.6%), support U.S. economy (84.5%) and a preference to buy local (59%). The survey also found usage of rice continues to trend upwards because of its perceived main benefits of versatility, customer appeal and helps control cost per plate.
September is also Whole Grains Month, and USA Rice’s research further showed operators are expecting to significantly increase usage of whole grain brown rice specifically. The Whole Grains Council (www.wholegrainscouncil.org), an organization dedicated to promoting increased whole grains consumption, is encouraging this trend by holding its annual Whole Grains nutritious whole grain option, like brown rice, every day during September.
“As chefs and operators preferences for U.S. and local ingredients increase, it’s our continued goal to build awareness of U.S.-grown rice and its many benefits that make it essential to foodservice,” said Anne Banville, Vice President of Domestic Promotion for USA Rice Federation. “National Rice Month, coupled with Whole Grains Month, provides the perfect opportunity to celebrate America’s rice farmers and the vital role U.S. rice plays in foodservice.”
